What is Thermal Engineering?

The Thermal Engineering Major or Thermal – Refrigeration Engineering Technology appeared in Vietnam in the 1960s. When the North embarked on industrialization, it received help from the Soviet Union and China to build thermal power plants. Electrical energy is the key to industrialization. Therefore, since its inception, thermal – refrigeration engineering has always been a key sector in the industrial production process.

So what is Thermal Engineering? Thermal Engineering is the field that studies thermal and refrigeration systems, applying science and technology to design and operate thermal – refrigeration systems and equipment, serving human life needs as well as industrial production.

The field includes three main areas:

  • Production and conversion of energy forms – the field of thermal power and renewable energy;
  • Providing heat and steam for industrial, commercial, and household use – industrial heat;
  • Refrigeration and air conditioning technology.

What do you study in Thermal – Refrigeration Engineering Technology?

As a foundational element of industrial production, Thermal – Refrigeration Engineering Technology includes subjects from 04 fields: mechanical manufacturing, electricity, thermal energy, and automatic control. Mechanical Manufacturing: Operating mechanisms, manufacturing technology for thermal and refrigeration equipment. Electricity, Thermal Energy: Designing, consulting, and constructing electrical refrigeration systems, central air conditioning systems for high-rise buildings, cold storage plants, ice plants, cold storage warehouses, boilers, thermal power plants…

The volume of general education subjects is relatively high compared to other engineering majors. This is not an easy challenge for students pursuing this field. Additionally, the thermal engineering program includes about 25% subjects from mechanical manufacturing, 15% from electrical engineering, 10% from automation and control, and the remaining 50% of subjects belong to the field of thermal energy and renewable energy.

Precisely this diversity, integrating many key sectors, allows thermal-refrigeration engineering graduates to easily find job opportunities and quickly adapt to all job requirements.
